Sterilisation Log

Practices should be aware that although not essential, for medico legal reasons it is a good idea to have a tracking system in place to follow the use of sterilised equipment.

GPA ACCREDITATION plus has recently developed templates for a Sterilisation Log and a Patient Equipment Log.
* The Sterilisation Log documents what equipment has been sterilised in each load and verifies that the equipment is indeed sterile.
* The Patient Equipment Log documents what sterile equipment is used for procedures on a particular patient, when the equipment was sterilised and which cycle of sterilisation it was included in.

Both logs should be used in conjunction with each other and a copy of the Patient Equipment Log should be stored not only in the patient health record, but along with the Sterilisation Log. This will simplify the tracking system should the Practice need to prove that equipment was sterile at the time of use.
